my students have found that mouthpiece buzzing after a few seconds of lip buzzing can help wake up the chops very effectively/ the ultimate goal for students with ‘normal’ embouchures is to buzz the lips and the mouthpiece the same way/ one should be able to place the mouthpiece onto the lips while they are buzzing without a break in the sound/ when a player says that they buzz the lips and the mouthpiece differently, my response is “wow, that is a shame”

Marching Band Chops

my trumpet students have inspired me to develop countless routines focusing on fundamentals and the development of great tone, range, and endurance/ students who are involved in marching band, jazz band, etc. need to pay special attention to taking care of their chops/ very important to warm up and be rested prior to a demanding rehearsal or performance/ picking a brief or extended routine will depend on available time and each individuals needs/ I strongly recommend that my students play an easy cool down session after a demanding rehearsal or performance/ download “Marching Band Chops”, a free mini book from the Resources page at PlylarTrumpetAcacemy.com/ the instruction and ideas included in this routine are invaluable/ do the long routine (35 minutes) or the short version (15 minutes)/ the exercises are extremely effective when you follow the directions and focus.

“PRE PRE WARM UP” – lip buzzing at the very beginning of the day can be very helpful/ I do about 45 seconds in the shower every morning/ waking up the lips and breathing properly can make the rest of the days trumpet playing a pleasure!

Time To Upgrade Trumpets?

yesterday, 2 of my students' parents (one novice & one intermediate) expressed interest in upgrading trumpets. as both were playing budget student model instruments, i quickly explained my philosophy of jumping from student to pro model. then, i compiled an e-mail to the parents and my favorite sales rep. at milano's music store, mesa az, chuck kerrigan. my e-mail included suggested brands, prices, links to several sources, including, local stores, out-of-state stores, ebay, & craig's list. the benefits and drawbacks of used & new purchases were explained. then, i sent a request for used tpts to all of my colleagues in az, including local freelancers, orchestral players, & university professors, plus, my current & former students. the response was quick and fruitful. e-mail and internet savy have allowed me to provide the best service possible to my students and their parents. it is much appreciated by all!
